Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses TellYouGov?
TellYouGov is currently being used by over 13000 active panelists every week and this number is growing all the time. Furthermore, we have people commenting from all groups in society, from the under 20s to the over 60s, men and women, workers and the unemployed. TellYouGov is designed as a tool to show what is most important to you, the users, and through you, what is important in society TODAY. The volume and variety of users is one of its most important assets.
What is a Tyg
A Tyg is a TellYouGov comment in the form of Brief topic | + or - | Comment. It is a way you can make a comment quickly and easily on any topic that you want to be heard on and then track how it compares with that of others in an innovative new YouGov format.
Why isn’t my tyg showing on the TellYouGov website?
There are four main reasons for this to be the case:
If your Tyg has been added under a new or unrecognised topic it will need to be processed by our team. This can take a short while but don’t worry; we will be working on it!
You may not have used the tyg format correctly. The correct format is: Brief topic | + or - | Comment
If you have commented a number of times on one topic within a short time only the most recent will be shown. This is unfortunately necessary to prevent spammers from distorting opinions on the site and make sure it provides the best service for you.
We are constantly working to update and improve our site, however occasionally bugs occur. We apologise if this happens but email us at tygsupport@yougov.com so can investigate and sort it out.
What do the TellYouGov scores mean?
Score: The score tells you what the overall feeling about a topic is - positive or negative. It is calculated by comparing the number of positive Tygs about a topic with the number of negative Tygs to give an overall sense of how people are feeling. The exact number is reached by subtracting the proportion of negative Tygs from the proportion of positive Tygs: A score of ‘+350’ could be reached if 4.5% of ALL Tygs on a topic were +ve and only 1.5% of ALL Tygs were -ve.
Volume: The volume tells you how important a topic is to users at any one time judged by the number of comments being made. It is produced by taking the number of comments on a topic as a proportion of all topics in the same time period. A Volume of ‘550’ would mean that 5.5% of all Tygs in this period were on that topic. Together these figures are intended to indicate the overall public feeling about a topic and its relative importance. To make it easier to see recent trends we have also included a ‘change in’ popup for both Score and Volume so you can see how public opinion waxes and wanes.
How can I use the site to compare my views with others?
The Leaderboard is the main place to go to see what’s hot and what’s not at any time by presenting a live stream of what people are commenting on now. Want to know what people are saying and feel about the latest news story or product release - here’s the place to come. Furthermore, you can also use our search function to find out what people are saying about a specific topic, both now and how it has fared in the past.
How do I find my comments?
The comments you have made can be found in the My Profile section. This allows you to have an easily accessible record of all the things you have had to say.
Can my comments be linked to me personally?
No. All opinions that you post on TellYouGov are anonymous. We may link your comments to some limited demographic information but never to anything that is personally identifiable (eg name or address)
How is TellYouGov different to the main YouGov site or other public opinion sites?
TellYouGov is our site which lets you express your opinion on anything and everything in real time and without being asked. It allows you to track your opinion along with that of others in an innovative new YouGov format. In contrast to traditional trackers of public opinion which are dictated by the researcher, TellYouGov shapes itself around YOUR opinions, be it on Wayne Rooney, the latest gadget or breaking political scandals. It also gives you the chance to win a £50 cheque every time you Tyg.
What is your policy on censorship?
Our aim is to always encourage the FREE expression of your views and opinions on ALL topics and to allow and even encourage the ability to criticise or praise as you feel is deserved. Occasionally however, Tygs may be removed if they include explicit language, or if we judge them to be racial, religious or sexual incitement, or if they are libelous. Tygs that breach these rules will not be tolerated.
How do I flag an offensive comment that breaches the censorship policy?
We take very seriously comments that are offensive or inciteful in nature. If you notice a comment that has been missed by our moderation, please report it to our team via the feedback form and we will remove it. When you report the comment please include the topic it was on and the time it was posted. Thank you.
What do I do if I have not received my prize cheque?
After you have replied to confirm your acceptance of the prize we will always try to have the cheque sent to you within a week. Occasionally however, there may be a slight delay or problem. If you do have any problems please feel free to get in touch with our dedicated TellYouGov support team at tygsupport@yougov.com.
What do I do if I have a complaint or comment?
You can either email tygsupport@yougov.com or post a comment below or in our blog section.
